Igunga Property

Summary & Overview

  • The project area is covered almost entirely by mbuga. Outcrop of greenstone/BIF can be located on the Igunga hills, situated in the central portion of the project area.
  • Geophysically inferred structures favour a general NE and N-S trend.
  • Ground-truthing and a hand-auger sampling program throughout the project area are still pending.

Geology

Regional Geology:

The Igunga Project Area is located amongst the scattered greenstone fragments, to the SE of the Nzega greenstone belt. The area is almost entirely covered by mbuga, with the exception of the central portion of the project area, where the Igunga hills are characterized by greenstone/BIF outcrop. Airborne magnetic and radiometric data (November 2004), is restricted to the extreme northern boundary of the project area, and reveals a network of N-S and NE trending shears. The initial geological model for the area favours a volcano-sedimentary host, which is common in the Nzega greenstone belt. It is important to note that Golden Pride Mine (Resolute) is sedimentary-hosted, and located within the Nzega greenstone belt.

The project area falls within the Tanzanian "diamond corridor". Due to the large mbuga cover, no kimberlite occurrences have been documented within the project area itself. However, numerous kimberlites (both non-diamondiferous and diamondiferous) have been reported to the NW and SE portions of the Nzega greenstone belt.

Principal Structures:

With the absence of surface outcrop, principal geological structures have been inferred from limited airborne geophysical data. Lithological layering would appear to be striking almost E-W in the northern portion of the project area, which appears to form the southern limb of a tight isoclinal fold, with a fold axis trending EW. Further to the S, layering would appear to follow a more northeasterly strike. Inferred shear/fault-related lineaments have been recognized in the extreme N of the project area, which follow both a N-S and NE trend.

Geology of the Prospecting Areas:

No detailed geological information is available for any of the individual prospecting licenses, as a hand-auger sampling program to penetrate through mbuga cover to reach bedrock, is still pending.

Geophysics:

Limited airborne geophysics is available for the northernmost part of the project area.

Future Activities

  • All Pls to be field checked for available outcrop, and geologically mapped where possible.
  • Systematic hand-auger sampling program over all PLs, to determine the rock type underlying the mbuga in addition to providing suitable in-situ material for geochemical assessment.
  • Regional biogeochemical survey.
  • Kimberlite evaluation using Indicator Mineral methods.
